Design Summary (2nd draft)-Seabin
According to Seabin’s Using Plastic to Fight Plastics Project
(2019), microplastics and microfibres are now considered one of the greatest threats to the marine
environment as they collect organic pollutants faster than inorganic
particles and marine animals accidentally ingest them. This problem is so acute that the United
Nation (UN) is calling for actions to be taken.
The article states that Seabin technology captures all surrounding
debris, and also removes considerable amounts of microplastics, preventing the
particles from breaking down into smaller pieces in the water.
The article also
describes how the Seabin method is cheaper and more time-efficient compared to
the manta trawl method. It mentions that the Seabin functions on its own around
the clock, which the manta trawl method was not able to achieve.
The Seabin
Project joins current global efforts to reduce micro-plastic and micro-fiber
loads in the ocean. From the article, it explains that further research and
development is carried out to improve the technology of the Seabin, allowing
to remove even smaller particles of microplastics in the near future.
